California poppy is our state flower. All 50 states have chosen flowers; some have chosen wildflowers, too. My favorites are Indian paintbrush (Wyoming), sego lily (Utah) and columbine (Colorado). Lots of states have chosen the rose as their symbol, including North Dakota, New York, Georgia, Iowa and Oklahoma. I guess everyone loves roses — with good reason.
The states that have both a flower and wildflower include: Louisiana, magnolia is the state flower, Louisiana iris is the wildflower; Mississippi, also the magnolia, tick seed is the wildflower; and Ohio, the scarlet carnation, white trillium is the wildflower.
If you’re interested in looking up another state, go to wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_flowers. It also has the scientific names and pictures of the flowers.
