... more“Cactus Flower” shares the tale of two co-workers who pretend to be married to help one of them with a complex rouse. Once they start pretending, it’s hard to remember who’s making believe and who’s really in love.
Lies are told and misunderstandings mount up. But it all makes for great comedy. There’s even an unexpected romance. The show will be onstage at Curtain Call’s Dressing Room Theatre in Stamford, Thursday, Jan. 9, through Sunday, Jan. 26.
This classic from playwright Abe Burrows was adapted from the French play, “Fleur de cactus.” The original cast of Burrows’ 1965 Broadway sex farce starred Lauren Bacall, Barry Nelson and Brenda Vaccaro. Its story was later adapted into a popular film, starring Goldie Hawn and Walter Matthau.
“Cactus Flower,” which opens Curtain Call’s 29th season, will be directed by Rich Mancini. Producer Lou Ursone says it’s a “lighthearted and very enjoyable comedy for the dark days of winter.”
Ursone added, “The TV series, ‘Madmen,’ brought the ’60s back to us. ‘Cactus Flower,’ originally from the ’60s, brings us a wall phone, funky scenic colors and groovy costumes that really evoke that time period.”
Curtain Call shared more in a news release, saying the story involves a young woman, Toni Simmons, and a middle-aged dentist, Dr. Julian Winston. Toni is the dentist’s girlfriend.
“Toni knows that he is married,” the release says. “What she doesn’t know is that his ‘marriage’ is actually an elaborate lie concocted to keep Toni at arm’s length.”
Convinced that Julian won’t leave his wife, Toni attempts a lame suicide, only to be saved by her neighbor. Then guilt-ridden Julian decides he really wants to marry her, so he says he’s getting divorced. When Toni demands proof, he enlists the help of his devoted nurse/receptionist, Stephanie, to play his soon-to-be ex. Things go off the rails, even further, from there.
The cast includes Joseph Caputo, Roger Dykeman, Greg Ellis, Betsy Grover, Samantha Holomakoff, Gillian Holt, Aaron Newcome, Kristina Mitchell and Mat Young. Set design is by Peter Barbieri, Jr., costumes are by Helen Adams, and lighting design is by Jamie LaJoie.
The Dressing Room Theatre is at the Sterling Farms Theatre Complex. Doors open one hour before show time for a “bring your own everything” format; seating is cabaret style.
